“Forces of nature”

I watched Brian Cox presenting “Forces of Nature” on BBC1 last night. As ever it was a totally captivating explanation of science from a charismatic ‘expert’. Towards the end of the programme he went to Iceland where a guy had found a hot water vent in the sea. It was not in very deep water and he was able to dive to it and take a water sample. Cox used the sample to demonstrate a theory of how life on Earth began. The vent emits alkaline fresh water into the sea. Cox showed that by using seawater and the fresh water from the vent that electricity could be generated. He explained that it was due to proton exchange between the different chemical compositions of fresh and sea water. His theory is that that is life on Earth began.

One his final remarks sums up reason for my work; “we are of the Earth.” We rely on it for everything that we need to live. What we do leaves marks, sometime subtle sometimes brutal. That is what drives my photography – a fascination with human interaction with the land, the Earth and life.


Views of Iceland

I have long been a fan of making photographs close to home. Not just because it reduces travelling which means lower carbon dioxide emissions but because what is happening outside our own front door is important.

Many photographers make a bit thing of their globetrotting to the preferred locations that have the best landscapes. Iceland is a current favourite and there is no denying that is has stunning ‘views’ with a long list of honey spots that must be included in any photographic itinerary.

The end result of the many photographs produced is the assumption that Iceland is full of scenic, natural, unspoilt ‘wilderness’. It is a very seductive view of the country but it is a partial image that leaves out as much as it includes. It also produces a mythicised and romanticised concept of landscape that bears little resemblance to reality.

There is another side to the Iceland that is less publicised. Today I was sent a link to the work of Pétur Thomsen and was particularly interested in his project “Imported Landscape” –  (follow the link for the stunning images)
Here is what he says:

“In the year 2003 The National Power Company of Iceland started the building of the 700 MW Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland. The project consists of three dams, one of them being the highest in Europe, and a hydroelectric power plant. The dams block among others the big glacial river Jökulsá á Dal, creating the 57km2 artificial lake Hálslón.

The Power plant is primarily being constructed to supply electricity to a new Aluminium smelter built by Alcoa of USA in the fjord of Reyðarfjörður on the east coast of Iceland.”


I guess it is no wonder that the hordes of photographic tourists choose not to photograph an industrial incursion of this scale. Admitting that Iceland is not pristine and natural would shatter the myth that is the basis for their visit.

What bothers me most is that such partial views of landscape creates unrealistic expectations. Photographic tourists see landscape as pristine and natural which denies any human involvement in the shaping and exploitation of the land. It also divorces us from the land as it seen as something out there rather than something that we are part of. That denies the responsibility we have for protecting the very thing that supports all forms of life.

Four prints shortlisted RPS Internationl Print Exhibition #159

A few weeks back I entered 4 prints from the Quarried exhibition in the Royal Photographic Society International Print Exhibition #159 and forgot all about it. Today I heard that all 4 have been shortlisted. Now they have to be printed and sent down to Bath for the final selection.

New work – Great Dome Art fair

The Great Dome Art Fair is fast approaching and I am in the process completing the first series in my Fractured Landscape project to be launched at the Dome. The gelatin silver prints will be around 28cm square in frames 48cm square. Each print is processed to archival standards and mounted on archival board with an archival over mount or matt.

Nature – just a place to visit?

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” Gary Snyder.

That sums up exactly what I have been feeling for a long time. What does it mean about the way we think about and treat nature and ‘wilderness’? As photographers we can either see nature as out there, somewhere to be visited and photographed, as separate from life, distant, with no relevance other than to provide the perfect view, the perfect ‘masterpiece’.

The alternative is to explore our relationship with the land, the Earth. That might sound too abstract, too ‘touchy feely’ to some but it has a profound effect on the images produced. Look at photographers like Thomas Joshua Cooper, Jem Southam, John Blakemore, Alex Boyd and others who clearly relate to the land they photograph and are not just out to produce a technically perfect print to score points or win prizes.

For me photography is about expressing thoughts and feelings. I am not looking for any accolades it is just something I have to do. Over the years I have become more connected to the land and the consequences of how we treat it. To me it is crazy not to have a relationship with the very thing on which we depend on for our very survival.
